Support Us: London Marathon Runners 2025: Lauren taking on the challenge for Rico!
21 May 2025
At Tree of Hope, we’re continually inspired by the incredible individuals who go above and beyond to support our mission. Today, we’re shining a spotlight on one of those individuals—Lauren Dietz, who ran the 2025 London Marathon in support of young Rico, a brave little boy on a journey that needs just a bit more help.
We caught up with Lauren shortly after the event to hear all about her marathon experience, her motivation for taking part, and how the power of community helped push her across the finish line.
An electric day at the London Marathon 2025
“I’m still reflecting on what a fantastic day it was,” Lauren told us. “It felt like a party from start to finish. The atmosphere, the crowd, the high-fives from total strangers—it all kept me going.”
Despite the warm weather and physical challenge, Lauren pushed through with the support of the crowd and her own determination. “I had my name on my running vest, and every time someone shouted ‘Go Lauren!’ it gave me the lift I needed to keep putting one foot in front of the other.”

Fundraising for Rico: Why Lauren Ran for Tree of Hope
Lauren’s motivation for running was deeply personal. She ran in support of Rico, the son of her friend Moira, whom she met through NCT classes.
“Rico is an incredible little boy—a real fighter,” Lauren shared. “He experienced brain damage at birth and lives with several motor-related conditions. His family has been working with Tree of Hope to fundraise for the therapies and equipment he needs to meet his developmental milestones.”
After winning a place in the marathon ballot, Lauren immediately knew she wanted to dedicate her run to Rico’s cause. “It was never about just running—it was about doing something meaningful.”
From Couch to Marathon: How Lauren Trained as a First-Time Runner
Lauren wasn’t an experienced runner before her training began. “I hadn’t done any serious running in years. But with Moira’s support—she’s run four marathons herself—I took on the challenge.”
Her training journey took her from short runs to comfortably managing 10-mile sessions, and eventually the full 26.2 miles. “It changed my mindset completely. I’ve discovered I really enjoy running and the discipline that comes with it.”
Lauren initially set out to raise £1,000, but ended up with £1,620—a significant contribution toward the cost of Rico’s therapy and care. “I was blown away by everyone’s generosity. That money is going to have a real impact.”
Life After the Marathon: What's Next for Lauren?
So, has the marathon sparked a new passion? Definitely.
“I think I’ve got the running bug now! I’m already looking at half marathons later this year, and I’d love to do another full marathon. I’m so proud of what I achieved—not just for me, but for Rico.”
Lauren finished the marathon without injury and, remarkably, without even a blister. “Not bad for someone who didn’t consider herself a runner!”
Thank You, Lauren – A True Tree of Hope Hero
Lauren’s story perfectly captures the power of community and compassion. Thanks to her efforts, Rico will be able to access more of the support he needs to thrive.
“Children like Rico don’t always get what they need from the NHS alone,” says Georgina Lowry from Tree of Hope. “That’s why fundraisers like Lauren are so important—they help us bridge the funding gap for families who desperately need our support.”
