Sophia's Footsteps - Post Surgery Equipment Fund
Thank you for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
On 19th April 2016, Sophia will be undergoing major surgery again, but this time here in the UK. Sophia requires right hip VDRO & Pelvic Osteotomy which will shorten her leg length even more (there is already a discrepancy), hip surgery on her left hip and leg shortening to equalise the leg length. This will mean the first time for many years that Sophia will have equal leg lengths. At the same time, Sophia will have flat foot reconstruction surgery on both feet (bilateral talonavicular fusion). There is an 8 week non-weight bearing recovery period, which is going to be tough for Sophia.
Following this major surgery, it is imperative that Sophia sits in a correct postural position. Unfortunately, her wheelchair is now way too small for her, and she has actually grown 4.5 inches in her legs alone, since her last measurements were taken. Her equipment suppliers have quoted the following for a new suitable wheelchair:
Kuschall Titanium K Series wheelchair - £3000.00
Matrix Libra Cushion - £318.75
Matrix Elite 1514 Backrest - £450.00
Sophia has NHS physio visits once per term at school, and so apart from daily physio at home with the family, we pay for private physio sessions, which come at a high cost. The private physio sessions and extremely beneficial as, many parents will know, children work much harder for professionals, and doing physio with (nagging) parents just doesn't get the same results! We would like to try and raise funds towards Sophia's ongoing physio costs if possible, post surgery, to give her the best possible results. Having gone through such a traumatic procedure, we really want to ensure that Sophia recovers in the correct manner, and is given the best chance at achieving an independent life as an adult.
Sophia's Dad Nick, and 13 year old brother Harvey will be cycling the London to Brighton bike ride, to raise funds for Sophia. This will be Harveys first ever competitive ride, and will be a huge challenge for him. The starting age for this is 14, luckily his Birthday is a matter of days before the race which takes place on Fathers Day!
If you would like to sponsor them, please donate through the link on this page. It goes straight to the Tree of Hope who pay for any equipment / physio that is needed for Sophia.
May I take this opportunity to thank you for visiting our page, and for supporting Sophia through this difficult time. The next few months are going to be extremely tough for her, so please think of her on Tuesday 19th April when she undergoes her major surgery. Thankyou!
