samantha's help shannons dream to walk
Hi everyone and thanks for looking at my page.
My name is Shannon and I am six years old but I am nearly seven. I was born at full term and weighed 4lb 14oz. My grown ups didn't think anything was wrong with me and thought i was perfect. Of course I am but i'm very special too because I was diagnosed with cerebral palsy nine days after my first birthday. Now everyone knows why I didn't like eating anything and struggled to even take a bottle.
By the age of two and a half, i only weighed 17lb so I had to have a peg feed fitted to my tummy. I call it Stuey after Dr Stuart who fitted it and he helps me to get strong. I have gained 23lb thanks to Stuey and I can now sit up without falling over and shufffle about on my bum. Nanny calls me a shuffle monster and it's funny.
My arms and legs won't do as I tell them but there is a special operation that I can have to help me to walk. It is called Selective Dorsel Rhizotomy (SDR) which is surgery to my spine. The operation is very successful and is followed by intensive physiotherapy but all of the children that have had this operation are either now walking or well on their way towards it.
I was really excited and only a little bit scared when I found out that I could have this operation because then I can run around in the playground with my friends and mummy said she will buy me a bike to ride and a doll's real pram to push and go for walks with. I especially want to be able to wear real shoes like other girls wear, like the sparkly ones that they wear at parties instead of my peidros and splints.
Yay I have now had the SDR surgery. It was done at Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham. Now all I need is lots of physiotherapy to help me in my dream to walk. I need to raise lots of money to help me to do this but it is not just for me. I want to help other children who have the surgery to be able to walk too. Thank you very much to everyone who has already made a donation. Obviously, lots of money means lots of physio and i am sure with your help, I will be running around in no time.
