The Light Clinic, based at Readings University, opened a new hyperbaric oxygen chamber in January 2013 and now offers hyperbaric oxygen therapy within its list of therapies.

What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)?
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a method of administering pure oxygen at greater than atmospheric pressure.
The oxygen is administered by a hyperbaric oxygen chamber which is a pressure chamber (If you have flown on an aeroplane, you have already experienced a pressure chamber).

How does it work?
Breathing high levels of oxygen under hyperbaric conditions causes greater uptake of oxygen, increasing the amount of oxygen in the blood plasma and therefore stimulates the normal healing and repair function of all cells and tissues, including those in the brain, enabling them to heal much faster.
The extra oxygen has additional benefits as it enhances the ability of white blood cells to kill bacteria. It also reduces swelling and enables new blood vessels to grow into the affected areas.

What does it treat?
Traditionally used to treat decompression sickness and carbon monoxide poisoning, there is now notable research into HBOT treatment of certain conditions including autism, cerebral palsy, stroke, traumatic brain injury (TBI) to name a few.
Our clinicians have a formidable blend of experience and expertise in the scientific, medical, nursing and business arenas. Our main focus is our customers and we are happy to discuss any questions you may have.
