When Max was only 2 days old he suffered a huge bleed on his brain caused by his tiny lungs collapsing.

After the doctors conducted brain scans on Max, his parents were told that the left side of his brain was badly damaged and that he would have cerebral palsy. The doctors were also unsure of the long term prognosis – perhaps, it could simply be that Max was bad at maths or worse, that Max could be in a wheel chair for the rest of his life!

Max had a really tough first year of his life and spent the first three months of it in hospital.  He was ventilated for five weeks and then on oxygen until he was eight months old.  Because of the bleed on Max’s brain, he developed Hydrocephalus (fluid on the brain), which meant that at seven months old, he had a shunt inserted into his brain to drain fluid.

Max has had lots of ups and downs, but is now doing really well.  He is now able to walk with some support for short distances and uses a walker or special buggy.

Max has regular physiotherapy to strengthen his muscles and gain core stability, as well as having speech & language therapy and occupatonal therapy.

Recently, Max has started to have specialist therapy in Oxford called ‘Spider Therapy’.  This has made a huge difference to his physical abilities.  As a result, he is now stronger, has better posture and can walk and balance better.

This therapy costs a lot of money, especially with him wanting and needing to do it more than just once a year.  Max also needs a specially adapted trike to help strengthen his legs and hips, as well as giving him more independence when playing with his sister and friends.

This trike and therapy will hopefully help towards making Max walk independently and could change his life.
